The “Activity Categories” you select for your places page on google are very important. Your choices can help your business be visible to all local clients it is trying to reach, or they can also ask Google to map out your business (and not to return you back, until you set up your own categories).
Fortunately, it’s easy to select the best categories when developing the first list, and later it’s easy to change the categories if you do not select the right options at first. All you need to do is sign in to your places page and edit them. You do not even need to get a PIN and check again if you have a site places page.
Regardless of the stage of your Google places site, it can be visible to most local customers by choosing your categories based on these practices:
- Follow Google places quality guild lines.
They are clear and concise in relation to categories. Of course, there’s plenty of room to get confused even if you follow them, but if you are not following them, Google will certainly ensure you lose your visibility in Google Places. (Be sure to pay attention to the description rule for your business categories, and how it can define your business and services it offers.
- Select many relevant categories
Preferably five (5) as the maximum number you can select. Focus on “relevant”. If you offer repair services for appliances, do not select appliance Store if you are not selling devices.
- Use the Toronto 411 smart search tool
This tool is helpful in finding the appropriate category names that properly describe your business and the services you offer, it also makes sure that you do not forget any categories that really apply to you.
- Use the Google Keyword Tool
Whenever you face a problem with deciding which category to select (among several good options). Enter the category name literally in the Keyword Tool and determine which is the most common local search. In my own opinion, I will mainly suggest that you select the one with highest local search results.
- Follow the categories selected by your highest ranked competitors
Ensure to follow the categories selected by your highest ranked competitors and the order where the categories appear. To do this, simply go to the Google Places page and see their categories. Check if you have discovered or notice any pattern. If, for example, two best-rated companies use the same categories, consider these, and use them for your Google Places page.
